The
Edmonton & District Dental Society (EDDS) executive and members
are proud of their society's initiative to provide a $30,000
sustaining donation to the Boyle McCauley Health Centre (BMHC) dental
facility. The EDDS' accomplishments in community service reach a new
peak with their contribution to the Boyle McCauley Health Centre
dental facility.
This initiative allows dentists to
give back to their community in a very open and public way and shows
the importance dentists place on dental care and on helping others. It
reinforces the good that dentists all do through their profession and
validates the many individual contributions that dentists make.
The survival and success of the BMHC
dental clinic which serves the people in the inner city is now ensured
by the EDDS. The impoverished and homeless have complex needs that
this unique dental facility has valiantly served for ten years. The
clinic's day to day operations have been tenuously supported by
numerous challenging fundraising appeals. The inner city clientele -
who come from all over the province, are greatly in need of this
irreplaceable clinic on an ongoing basis.
To help you understand the meaning
of the Edmonton & District Dental Society’s gift, it provides
hundreds of emergency exams, it provides hundreds of preventative
interventions including treatment of severe abscesses that might
instead require hospitalizations, and it provides relief of pain for
hundreds of people living in poverty who otherwise would absolutely
not get this crucial care.
The EDDS donation of $30,000 for
each of the next three years has become significantly more valuable to
the BMHC dental clinic through matching grant money from the Winspear
Fund and the Edmonton Community Foundation. As a direct result of the
dental society’s donation these two groups have now also committed
to substantial ongoing funding for the BMHC dental clinic.
The EDDS should be congratulated for
their generous support to the inner city residents. A special thank
you to the EDDS 2003/2004 executive for their efforts which were
spearheaded by BMHC committee chair Dr. Lori Russett and aided by Dr.
Amanda Bailey.
